George Washington (b. Feb. 22, 1732, Westmoreland County, Va.-d. Dec. 14, 1799, Mount Vernon, VA) was the first president of the United States, serving from 1789 to 1797. The Virginia George Washington Bicentennial Commission was created bythe General Assembly in 1926. The purpose of the commission was to represent the state planning, coordinating and carrying out a program of celebration throughout the year 1932 for the two hundredth anniversary of the birth of George Washington.
